African Union Advocates for World Map Reflecting Continent’s True Size

The African Union (AU) is urging the global adoption of a world map that accurately represents the continent’s true size, challenging traditional projections that diminish Africa’s scale. The call, reported by Reuters, highlights the distortions in the widely used Mercator projection, which disproportionately enlarges regions farther from the equator.
AU officials argue that an accurate depiction would better reflect Africa’s vast geographical and economic significance. The continent, which could fit the U.S., China, India, and most of Europe within its borders, is often misrepresented as smaller than it truly is.
This push aligns with broader efforts to correct historical misrepresentations and promote a more equitable global perspective. If adopted, the revised maps could reshape perceptions in education, geopolitics, and international relations.
