Global Policy Action for Indigenous Livestock Biodiversity (LIAnGRFA)

Global (with focus on Africa, Asia, Latin America) Implementing Partners: International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), CGIAR, FAO, CBD Secretariat 1095 days Completion Date: Dec 2028

Project Overview

This multi-country initiative addresses the critical gap in global biodiversity governance by advocating for the formal inclusion of Local and Indigenous Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (LIAnGRFA) in the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) framework while implementing on-the-ground conservation models.

Core Objectives
1. Policy Influence: Secure explicit recognition of LIAnGRFA in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) targets and National Biodiversity Strategies (NBSAPs) by 2026.
2. Funding Mobilization: Establish dedicated financing streams (e.g., 10% of GEF/GCF biodiversity funds) for LIAnGRFA conservation.
3. Community Empowerment: Pilot community-led conservation programs in Kenya (Red Maasai sheep), India (Natu cattle), and Colombia (Criollo cattle) to demonstrate scalable models.
4. Knowledge Infrastructure: Develop an open-access Global LIAnGRFA Tracker to monitor breed populations, threats, and traditional knowledge.
